We need you!
We are looking for more people who understand the value of natural spaces, enjoy walking, birding, plant identification, and sharing their knowledge with others; people who are passionate about conservation. These volunteers will help us continue to grow as an organization, clean up the preserve, educate visitors, and provide oversight at the Preserve when the restoration is completed.
Restoration: Phase 2. Volunteers currently meet once a month to pick up litter and restore plant habitats on the rock. To mitigate graffiti, we are working to restore the dark patina layer on the rock, which is the foundation for mosses, lichens, and some vascular plants. Volunteers are filling divots with soil and using sticks, moss and lichen to create natural “dams.” Runoff from rain carries soil particles downslope, leaving behind a layer of dirt, eventually forming new patina.
You will see Restoration: Phase 2 events posted on the Events+News page, where you can register to volunteer. There are a variety of tasks to suit most physical abilities. On site, you may choose a task that works for you.
Volunteers are also needed to represent Friends of Bald Rock at community outreach events, such as Travelers Rest Farmers Market.
We are a small grassroots startup organization assisting the SC Department of Natural Resources in the cleanup, protection, and preservation of this iconic 165-acre property. Our volunteers are fun, warm and welcoming outdoor enthusiasts working to shift the culture of Bald Rock from vandalism to conservation. Come check us out!
